Civil Matters

Most civil disputes are not worth what it costs to fight them to the end. The useful question is rarely "can I win" — it is what the realistic outcome is, what getting there costs, and whether the other side can actually pay.

This office handles civil disputes for individuals and small businesses in Douglas and Sarpy Counties and throughout Nebraska, and will tell you early if the economics do not work.

Important Info Before Suit

DEADLINES ARE UNFORGIVING  - Every claim has a statute of limitations, and they vary by claim type. A strong case filed late is worth nothing. If something happened a while ago, ask sooner rather than later.

A JUDGMENT IS NOT MONEY  - Winning gives you a piece of paper. Collecting is a separate effort, and against someone with no assets and no steady income it may never produce anything. That assessment belongs at the beginning.

"STRONGLY-WORDED LETTER"  - A letter resolves more than you would think. A demand letter from an attorney, with a credible explanation of what follows, settles a substantial share of disputes for a fraction of what litigation costs.
